In June 2017, Max became Australia's youngest Black belt at the age of 20, under his father Peter de Been, a 5th degree Black Belt under Carlos Gracie Jr.

Born in 1996, Max entered his first Jiu Jitsu competition in 2000 and has been Pan Pacific Champion more than 10 times, as well as third in the World Blue Belt in 2012. He has won numerous titles and is believed to be Australia's best chance to be the first Black Belt World Champion. Max is a great instructor in all of his classes and is a big hit when he travels for seminars.

"Teaching Jiu Jitsu is so rewarding for me, I love seeing students progress and achieve their goals. There is nothing more satisfying than putting your time and effort into an individual and then watching them grow."

Max's achievements include:

  • Youngest Black Belt Australian National Champion
  • 11x Pan Pacific Champion
  • 7x Australian National Champion
  • 10x Victorian State Champion
  • Brazilian National Champion

From a Parent:

"Max has been coaching my son since he started learning Jiu Jitsu at a very young age. He has helped Will learn all of the important and necessary technical skills and knowledge which have enabled Will to become a respected Junior Competitor in the sport over nine years. Most importantly Max has instilled attitudes and values about the sport that has allowed Will to grow and develop without unrealistic pressure, which has enabled him to enjoy the sport and develop a genuine love of Jiu Jitsu. Thanks to Max, Jiu Jitsu is a daily part of Will’s lifestyle and he often takes the invaluable life lessons of Jiu Jitsu and applies them to the many life goals he aspires to accomplish in the future. Thanks Max!"
